R E S O L U T I O N
WHEREAS, June 2003 is Menopause Awareness Month, providing an
opportunity for Texans to learn more about this natural condition
that normally affects women between the ages of 40 and 55; and
WHEREAS, Bringing a change of life that can be accompanied by
symptoms that range from mild to severe and that include such
problems as mood swings and hot flashes, menopause is a transition
period during which a woman's body decreases the production of
estrogen and progesterone; and
WHEREAS, The long-term health risks associated with
menopause include osteoporosis, heart disease, and various other
health issues; more than 50 percent of women over the age of 50 will
suffer an osteoporotic fracture or die from cardiovascular disease;
and
WHEREAS, Many women do not have access to health care
professionals who can help them evaluate the extensive and often
complex literature about menopause and their health or explain the
variety of treatment options available to them; and
WHEREAS, This special month is an important public awareness
campaign through which women in our state can learn to deal with the
impact of menopause on their lives and assess the treatment options
for menopausal symptoms; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 78th Texas
Legislature hereby recognize June 2003 as Menopause Awareness Month
in Texas and encourage all Texans to support efforts to provide
women with the vital information and assistance needed to live
healthy lives during menopause.
