                                                                  H.R. No. 747


R E S O L U T I O N
WHEREAS, On January 11, 2003, residents of Midland lost a beloved friend, neighbor, and community leader with the passing of Samuel Harrill at the age of 79; and WHEREAS, A native of North Carolina, Mr. Harrill was born in Forest City on April 23, 1923; he attended Brevard College and was selected to attend officer candidate school at Notre Dame University, from which he graduated in 1942; and WHEREAS, After completing his military service aboard the USS Topeka during World War II, he earned a bachelor's degree in mechanical engineering from Oklahoma State University at Stillwater and embarked on a career as a petroleum engineer with Humble Oil and Refinery; during his tenure with the company, he lived and worked in Kingsville, Houston, Midland, Hobbs, New Mexico, and Monahans before returning to Midland and retiring in 1985; and WHEREAS, In retirement, Mr. Harrill gave generously of his time and talents in support of a host of worthwhile community organizations, including the Permian Basin Girl Scout Council, the Optimist Club, Hospice of Midland, Big Brothers Big Sisters, Christmas in Action, and Presbyterian Ministries; and WHEREAS, This esteemed gentleman was also an avid supporter of Midland Habitat for Humanity; in addition to serving on the organization's board and assisting in the construction of homes for those less fortunate, he worked hard in behalf of its resale shop by helping in the store, making donation pickups, and, when he could no longer contribute physically, donating his truck to the store so that others could continue providing this essential service; and WHEREAS, A tireless volunteer, generous philanthropist, and devoted family man, Samuel Harrill will long be missed and remembered by all who were privileged to know him; now, therefore, be it RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 78th Texas Legislature hereby pay tribute to the life of Samuel Harrill and extend sincere sympathy to the members of his family: to his wife, Marie; to his son, Sam Harrill, Jr.; to his daughters and sons-in-law, Karen and Todd Burkey and Robbye Harrill and John Baker; to his grandson, Sean Travis Potter; to his stepchildren, Janet Porter and Virgil Davenport; to his step-grandchildren, Joanna Porter and Jeff Mullinax; to his step-great-grandson, Dalton Mullinax; to his brother and sister-in-law, Bill and Martha Harrill; and to his other relatives and many friends; and, be it further RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be prepared for his family and that when the Texas House of Representatives adjourns this day, it do so in memory of Samuel Harrill.
