H.R. No. 762
R E S O L U T I O N
WHEREAS, Each year, the Houston Heights Association confers
the Marcella Perry Award on an individual who has quietly dedicated
himself toward the improvement, beautification, and cultural
development of Houston Heights, one of the state's oldest planned
communities, and this year's recipient, architect Carvel Glenn, has
exemplified the spirit of this award for the past three decades; and
WHEREAS, Houston Heights, created more than a century ago by
Oscar Carter and the Omaha Texas Land Company, was founded in 1891
and annexed by Houston in 1918; throughout its history, this
charming, eclectic neighborhood has become known for its
distinctive Victorian residences, wonderful antique stores and
specialty shops, and popular annual events; and
WHEREAS, Mr. Glenn developed his lifelong passion for the
Houston Heights area while attending Rice University, when as a
student he wrote a paper analyzing the architecture of the front
porches for which the neighborhood is so justly renowned; after
purchasing his first house in the area in 1974, a property he
restored and renovated with his late wife, Herta, Mr. Glenn would
move into no fewer than three other Heights homes, taking immense
pride in serving as a host in countless local home tours; for many
years he has also been an active member of the Houston Heights
Association, an organization founded in 1973 that has helped to
improve the area's infrastructure, organize neighborhood events
and celebrations, and protect local buildings and areas of historic
importance; and
WHEREAS, In addition to remodeling his own homes, Mr. Glenn
has left his mark on Houston Heights as a professional architect,
designer, and landscape designer for other properties in the
community; he has donated hundreds of hours of professional work to
the Houston Heights Association's Boulevard Beautification
Committee in the development of a visionary reforestation plan, and
his redesign of the World War II Memorial Plaza was heralded as a
major success; and
WHEREAS, During the course of each one of these diverse
projects, Mr. Glenn has striven to preserve the area's rich
historical legacy while helping to create a vibrant and adaptable
community for many future generations of Houstonians, and his
talent, enthusiasm, and compassion have earned him the admiration
and respect of countless individuals, families, and organizations;
now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 78th Texas
Legislature hereby congratulate Carvel Glenn on receiving the
Marcella Perry Award from the Houston Heights Association and
extend to him warmest best wishes for happiness and success in his
future endeavors; and, be it further
RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
prepared for Mr. Glenn as an expression of high regard by the Texas
House of Representatives.
