R E S O L U T I O N
WHEREAS, Florentino "Lico" Subia is well known to the people of El Paso as a man dedicated to helping those less fortunate than himself, and he indeed merits special recognition; and WHEREAS, Founder and president of the Iron Horses motorcycle club, Mr. Subia today leads the club in carrying out projects of benefit to the community, particularly its children; this past Christmas, members collected toy drive donations from students at three local elementary schools, an effort that provided a practical lesson for the young Texans about helping other boys and girls in need; and WHEREAS, The 71-year-old has been an avid rider since receiving his first motorcycle at the age of 15; retired from employment as a motorcycle messenger for Western Union, he now works repairing the bikes, an interest he shares with his wife; in addition, this former boxer also devotes time to young people by training boxers at the Armijo Center in South El Paso; and WHEREAS, A Korean War veteran, Mr. Subia enjoys a warm family life with his wife of 28 years, Mickie, his five children, and his grandchildren and great-grandchildren; a mural painted at his home by a friend memorializes his son, Florentino "Nunie" Subia, Jr., who died at the age of 21 in an accident on Father's Day 1980; through the mural, Mr. and Mrs. Subia met Laura Bush, then First Lady of Texas, when she visited their home to view the tribute, and soon after they met then-Governor Bush; and WHEREAS, Since that meeting five years ago, President and Mrs. Bush have kept in touch with the Subias; recently Mr. Subia was appointed by the president to serve on the board of the Legal Services Corporation, an organization that assists low-income individuals seeking legal aid; and WHEREAS, Through his many good works, Lico Subia has contributed immeasurably to his community and our nation, and it is a pleasure to honor him at this time; now, therefore, be it RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 78th Texas Legislature hereby commend Florentino "Lico" Subia for his exceptional compassion and generosity in behalf of others and extend to him heartfelt best wishes for the future; and, be it further RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be prepared for Mr. Subia as an expression of high regard by the Texas House of Representatives.
