R E S O L U T I O N
WHEREAS, The passing of Ignacio "Joe" Vallejo, Jr., on
December 11, 2002, at the age of 82, has left a void in the lives of
his family and friends, and it is indeed fitting at this time to
commemorate his long and fruitful life; and
WHEREAS, Born January 12, 1920, in Kyle, Mr. Vallejo was a
pioneer in the promotion of Hispanic and Tejano music, booking acts
at El Campo's Pan American Ballroom for nearly 40 years and sharing
music with listeners for 51 years as the host of radio station
KULP's "Pan American Hour"; and
WHEREAS, In 1941, he and his wife, Vivian, were united in
matrimony at Our Lady of Guadalupe Catholic Church in Seguin; he
served during World War II as a corporal in the Army Air Corps
before settling in El Campo in 1948; and
WHEREAS, Mr. Vallejo was the owner of El Campo Café and,
later, El Campo Restaurant, which he operated until 1971; his true
passion, however, was music, and in 1963 he built the renowned Pan
American Ballroom, which he managed until 1998; and
WHEREAS, Such luminaries as Ernest Tubb, Hank Williams, Jr.,
Buck Owens, and Loretta Lynn played the Pan American Ballroom
during its heyday, and now-famous acts such as Little Joe y La
Familia and teen sensation Selena performed at the venue before
gaining widespread fame; and
WHEREAS, Mr. Vallejo was a member of St. Robert's Catholic
Church, American Legion Post 251, and Knights of Columbus 2490; he
was also the founder and president of the Pan American Scholarship
Fund and was a dedicated supporter of education; and
WHEREAS, A man committed to excellence in all his endeavors,
Mr. Vallejo was someone who could be depended on in times of need,
and his contributions to his community and the music industry will
not soon be forgotten; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 78th Texas
Legislature hereby pay tribute to the life of Ignacio "Joe"
Vallejo, Jr., and extend sincere sympathy to the members of his
family: to his wife, Vivian Castellanos Vallejo; to his daughters
and sons-in-law, Dolly and John Cisneros, Janie and Jackie Saucedo,
and Motsy and Virgil Quintero; to his son, Joe Vallejo III, and his
daughter-in-law, Brenda Vallejo; to his sister, Aurora
Castellanos; to his brothers, Elmer Vallejo, Baltimore Vallejo, and
Robert Vallejo; to his grandchildren and their spouses; and to the
other relatives and many friends of this beloved gentleman; and, be
it further
RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
prepared for his family and that when the Texas House of
Representatives adjourns this day, it do so in memory of Ignacio
"Joe" Vallejo, Jr.
