R E S O L U T I O N
WHEREAS, Catherine Gonzales has won this year's Hidalgo/Starr counties regional spelling bee, and her impressive accomplishment is indeed worthy of special recognition; and WHEREAS, An eighth grader at Mercedes Junior High School, Ms. Gonzales outperformed a field of 33 other participants by correctly spelling "benevolence" in the competition held on March 8, 2003, at The University of Texas-Pan American; and WHEREAS, The 14-year-old Texan will represent Hidalgo and Starr counties in the annual Scripps-Howard National Spelling Bee this May in Washington, D.C.; and WHEREAS, Supported in all that she does by her parents, Alfredo and Dora Gonzales, this outstanding young Texan has demonstrated exceptional intelligence, determination, and maturity in successfully pursuing her goals, and it is truly a pleasure to honor her at this time; now, therefore, be it RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 78th Texas Legislature hereby commend Catherine Gonzales on winning the 2003 Hidalgo/Starr counties regional spelling bee and extend to her sincere best wishes for continued success at the national championships and in all her future endeavors; and, be it further RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be prepared for Ms. Gonzales as an expression of high regard by the Texas House of Representatives.
