R E S O L U T I O N
WHEREAS, Wichita Falls community leaders have formed the
Zavala Hispanic Cultural Initiative and are working to establish
the Zavala Hispanic Cultural Center to address leadership and
involvement issues affecting the area's Hispanic population; and
WHEREAS, In May 2002, approximately 70 individuals met to
discuss how to best encourage Hispanic leadership in the Wichita
Falls community; to accomplish goals laid out for the group,
participants formed the initiative and its steering committee and
are now investigating prospective locations for a center that will
provide quality child care, English and Spanish classes, social and
health care agency services, and a place for fellowship; and
WHEREAS, Members of the Zavala Hispanic Cultural Initiative
are also taking advantage of various training and educational
opportunities; some will participate in Leadership Wichita Falls, a
program designed to familiarize individuals with the city and build
leadership skills, and others will attend Leadership 2003, which is
sponsored by the Center for Nonprofit Management; and
WHEREAS, Wichita County's Hispanic population, which is
predicted to triple by 2040, is making lasting, positive
contributions to the Wichita Falls community and surrounding areas,
and the Zavala Hispanic Cultural Initiative and Cultural Center are
notable endeavors worthy of special recognition; now, therefore, be
it
RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 78th Texas
Legislature commend all those associated with the Zavala Hispanic
Cultural Initiative and the Zavala Hispanic Cultural Center and
extend to them sincere best wishes for success in the future.
