R E S O L U T I O N
WHEREAS, Officer Kevin Pyeatt has been named Police Officer of the Year by the Abilene Crime Stoppers organization for his commitment to his profession and his community; and WHEREAS, A native of Lawton, Oklahoma, he was born on June 9, 1971, into a military family and lived in Texas, Alabama, Fort Knox, Fort Sill, and Germany during his youth; in 1994, he graduated from Cameron University with a bachelor's degree in criminal justice and joined the Abilene Police Department the following year; and WHEREAS, This esteemed lawman was chosen to be a field training officer in 1999, and the following year he became the K9 handler of Rocky, a 9-year-old, 115-pound German shepherd trained in narcotics, tracking, article search, criminal apprehension, and handler protection; today, Officer Pyeatt ranks as the unit's senior K9 handler and has assisted in the selection and training of three new K9 teams; and WHEREAS, In recognition of their expertise as a K9 team, Officer Pyeatt and Rocky won second place in narcotics competition in 2000, a gold medal in vehicle narcotics and a bronze medal in "Top Dog" competition in the 2001 Police Olympics, and a first-place award in 2002 competition; and WHEREAS, In all his endeavors, Officer Pyeatt enjoys the love and support of his family, including his devoted wife, Terri, and his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Ray Pyeatt; and WHEREAS, Over the course of his exemplary eight-year career with the Abilene Police Department, Officer Pyeatt has forged a record of meritorious service, loyalty, personal bravery, and self-sacrifice consistent with the highest ideals of the law enforcement profession; his work has helped to reduce crime in his community, and he and his partner remain an inspiration to all who are privileged to work with them; now, therefore, be it RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 78th Texas Legislature hereby congratulate Kevin Pyeatt for being named Police Officer of the Year by the Abilene Crime Stoppers organization and commend him for his steadfast commitment to the public welfare; and, be it further RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be prepared for Officer Pyeatt as an expression of high regard by the Texas House of Representatives.
