R E S O L U T I O N
WHEREAS, With the March 2003 dedication of her extraordinary glass mosaic mural, entitled Houston Bayou, at the George Bush Intercontinental Airport, Dixie Friend Gay of Houston Heights has achieved a new success in her notable career; and WHEREAS, The installation was designed by Ms. Gay to recreate the experience of visiting the wetland areas of South Texas; the landscape and its inhabitants are depicted on a serpentine wall mural, composed of 1.5 million pieces of specially fabricated glass, and the terrazzo floor, which includes 40 cast bronze representations of native animals, unifies the work in a truly spectacular manner; in researching this project, Ms. Gay traveled through the Houston bayous by kayak, finding in these waterways a serenity, purity, and sacredness that is too often missing from contemporary urban life; and WHEREAS, A high honors graduate of Northwestern Oklahoma State University, this versatile artist was trained at the Parsons School of Design and the Pratt Graphics Center, and in 1989 she completed her master's degree in studio arts at New York University; her works include drawings, paintings, and sculptures; and WHEREAS, Over the course of her career, Ms. Gay's pieces have been featured in galleries and museums across the United States, including the Bronx Museum, the Allan Stone Gallery, the Houston Museum of Fine Arts, the Eiteljorg Museum, and the van de Griff/Marr Gallery in Santa Fe; she received a commission to design the Sacred Meditation Room for Sheltering Arms in Houston, and today her creations can be found in the permanent collections of the Boston Public Library, the Kienholz Collection, the Houston Museum of Fine Arts, and the Art Museum of South Texas; and WHEREAS, An artist of vision and versatility, Ms. Gay has enriched the lives of many thousands of Texans as they travel, walk, and worship, and it is appropriate to take this opportunity to recognize her; now, therefore, be it RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 78th Texas Legislature congratulate Dixie Friend Gay on the success of her Houston Bayou installation and extend to her best wishes for the future; and, be it further RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be prepared for Ms. Gay as an expression of highest regard by the Texas House of Representatives.
