R E S O L U T I O N
WHEREAS, For more than a decade, the Greater East Texas Chapter of the National Black Leadership Initiative on Cancer (NBLIC) has provided a great service to the African-American community in East Texas; and WHEREAS, NBLIC was formed in 1991 by two nurses who wished to address the disproportionate burden of cancer death in the local black community; for the past 12 years, this group of volunteers has aimed to positively influence the knowledge, attitudes, and behaviors of African Americans about cancer, ultimately closing the racial gap in the fight against this devastating disease; and WHEREAS, A community outreach service, NBLIC offers an array of valuable programs that provide education on all types of cancer, recommend strategies to health care providers for reaching the underserved, and inform the public of the importance of healthy lifestyle choices; intervention also plays an integral role, with free mammograms and other valuable preventative tests made available to persons in Smith, Gregg, Harrison, Panola, Cherokee, Titus, Upshur, Van Zandt, Henderson, Rusk, Marion, and Camp counties; and WHEREAS, NBLIC is addressing a critical social need by offering essential assessment, outreach, and intervention services, and the volunteers who commit their time to this worthy cause are truly doing invaluable work; now, therefore, be it RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 78th Texas Legislature hereby recognize May 1, 2003, as Black Leadership Initiative on Cancer Day in Texas and commend the Greater East Texas Chapter of NBLIC for its service to the people of East Texas; and, be it further RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be prepared for the group as an expression of high regard by the Texas House of Representatives.
