R E S O L U T I O N
WHEREAS, The Texas Army National Guard has won nationwide
recognition with its receipt of the prestigious Secretary of the
Army Environmental Award for Cultural Resources Management for
2002; and
WHEREAS, Responsible for maintaining a number of key historic
properties across the Lone Star State, the Texas Army National
Guard currently manages 40,000 acres of land in support of military
training and public recreation; in addition, its cultural resources
staff has established programs to evaluate and protect important
historical and archeological sites, which include cemeteries,
prehistoric campsites and villages, Native American settlements,
and turn-of-the-century homesteads and farms; and
WHEREAS, The organization also manages several properties
listed on or eligible for inclusion in the National Register of
Historic Places, including Camp Mabry in Austin, Camp Bowie (Burned
Rock Middens) in Brownwood, and the Camp Swift Antoine Aussioux
Wine Cellar near Bastrop; in conjunction with The University of
Texas at San Antonio, it has developed innovative models for the
improved assessment of archeological sites, and the National Guard
staff has evaluated 95 percent of the land under its management to
allow essential military training while providing protection to
historically and archeologically significant sites; and
WHEREAS, The Environmental Award for Cultural Resources
Management is the highest award given by the Army for environmental
stewardship, and there can be no more worthy recipient of this
accolade than the Texas Army National Guard; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 78th Texas
Legislature hereby congratulate the Texas Army National Guard on
receiving the 2002 Secretary of the Army Environmental Award for
Cultural Resources Management; and, be it further
RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
prepared for the officers, staff, and members of the Texas Army
National Guard as an expression of high regard by the Texas House of
Representatives.
