H.R. No. 859
R E S O L U T I O N
WHEREAS, In recent weeks, many American employers have
expanded their pay differential and medical coverage policies for
reserve and national guard members called to active duty in the
service of the United States Armed Forces; the Employer Support of
the Guard and Reserve (ESGR) organization reports that more than
300 employers across the nation have gone above and beyond the
requirements of the law in support of their employees in military
service, and the Texas House of Representatives is proud to
recognize the efforts of one such company, Sears, Roebuck and Co.,
for its continuing commitment to its employees engaged in military
action; and
WHEREAS, Founded more than a century ago, Sears, Roebuck and
Co. is a leading retailer of apparel, home products and services,
and automotive products and services, with stores located
throughout the State of Texas; the company, whose annual revenues
exceed $40 billion a year, has long been an exemplary employer of
many Texans, providing significant benefits for its staff
associates, including those employees who have been called up to
serve in the reserves and the national guard; and
WHEREAS, Sears employees who served during Operation Desert
Storm, as well as in military actions such as those undertaken in
Eastern Europe, were able to fulfill their military duties without
jeopardizing their families' insurance coverage, thanks to their
employer's enlightened policies; today the company employs
approximately 200 full-time staff who are activated reservists; in
light of recent world events Sears has extended its military pay
differential from two weeks to 24 months, thus allowing servicemen
and servicewomen to retain life insurance and medical and dental
coverage and ensuring that these courageous individuals can resume
their careers at Sears on their return to civilian life; and
WHEREAS, The generosity and flexibility of firms such as
Sears have proven to be of fundamental importance to the success of
our nation's volunteer-based military, and it is fitting that we
salute this admirable employer for the extra steps it has taken to
provide for the families of those called to active military duty;
now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 78th Texas
Legislature hereby commend Sears, Roebuck and Co. for the financial
support it provides to its employees in the U.S. Armed Forces and
hereby encourage other companies in the Lone Star State to follow
this corporation's sterling example; and, be it further
RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
prepared for prominent display at Sears, Roebuck and Co. as an
expression of high regard by the Texas House of Representatives.
