R E S O L U T I O N
WHEREAS, Since 1959, the LULAC Feria de las Flores has raised scholarship money for deserving college-bound students, and this year marks the 44th anniversary of this beloved annual pageant; and WHEREAS, Created and organized by Joe Flores, the feria has been sponsored by LULAC Council No. 1 since the inaugural event in 1959, when Abby Pina was crowned as the first Feria de las Flores Queen; and WHEREAS, Contestants are judged in six categories: beauty, personality, poise, costume, dance routine, and on-stage question, and the event, which is designed to pay tribute to the heritage of Mexican American citizens, features music, dance, and dress that typify various regions south of the border; and WHEREAS, Through the generous support of the South Texas business community, LULAC Council No. 1 has distributed more than $1 million in scholarship funds to date, and this display of community spirit and dedication to providing educational opportunities for the young people of South Texas is truly worthy of special legislative recognition; now, therefore, be it RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 78th Texas Legislature hereby commemorate the 44th anniversary of the Feria de las Flores and commend the members of LULAC Council No. 1 for their significant efforts in this regard; and, be it further RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be prepared for LULAC Council No. 1 as an expression of high regard by the Texas House of Representatives.
