H.R. No. 884R E S O L U T I O N WHEREAS, Residents of Katy lost a beloved neighbor and friend with the passing of Jim Di Iorio on March 29, 2003, at the age of 89; and WHEREAS, Mr. Di Iorio was born in Hempstead on January 24, 1914, and graduated from Hempstead High School, where he was on the school's first football team, which is remembered for losing a game by the score of 106 to 6; despite this association, he attended Sam Houston State Teachers College on a football scholarship and earned degrees in math and physical education; and WHEREAS, This esteemed Texan began his career as a teacher and football coach at the School for the Deaf in Austin; he was in the reserves at the beginning of World War II and left his teaching post to serve some five years in the United States Army; he landed on Normandy beach the day after D-Day; and WHEREAS, Upon his return from military service, Mr. Di Iorio joined the staff of Humble Oil and Refinery in Katy, where he worked for 34 years as a lab chemist; and WHEREAS, An avid duck and goose hunter, Mr. Di Iorio gave generously of his time and talents in behalf of the Boy and Girl Scouts and Katy Christian Ministries food pantry; he was a founding member of St. Bartholomew Catholic Church in Katy and the first post commander for the Floyd E. Breedlove VFW Post No. 9182; and WHEREAS, Jim Di Iorio was a man of integrity, dedication, and strong faith, and while he will be greatly missed, his memory will live on in the hearts and minds of the many people whose lives he touched; now, therefore, be it RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 78th Texas Legislature hereby pay tribute to the life of Jim Di Iorio and extend sincere sympathy to the members of his family: to his wife of nearly 55 years, Margaret; to his son, Dr. Pat Di Iorio and his wife, Beth; to his grandchildren, Lauren Fenhaus and her husband, Joshua, Louis Landry and his wife, Andrea, Rick Landry and his wife, Christie, and Nicholas Di Iorio; to his sister, Pauline Younger; to his sister-in-law, Margerite Di Iorio; and to his other relatives and many friends; and, be it further RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be prepared for his family and that when the Texas House of Representatives adjourns this day, it do so in memory of Jim Di Iorio.
