H.R. No. 885
R E S O L U T I O N
WHEREAS, A 74th wedding anniversary is truly cause for
celebration, and on March 2, 2003, W. D. and Argie Lee Fussell of
Katy marked this momentous event in their marriage; and
WHEREAS, The couple met as teenagers, when Mr. Fussell
coached a girls' softball team for which his future bride was a
pitcher; three years later, the couple decided to marry on what
happened to be a holiday weekend, which is how their anniversary
coincides with Texas Independence Day; Mr. Fussell hitchhiked from
Huntsville, where he was a college student, to Grapeland, where his
intended lived and taught school; and
WHEREAS, At that time, a young woman could marry at 18, but
Mr. Fussell was one year short of the 21 age requirement for men, so
a married friend accompanied the two to obtain a marriage license;
they pledged their vows on March 2, 1929, in a Baptist church near
the courthouse and spent their wedding night in Crockett, all the
while using the car belonging to the bride's father without his
knowledge; and
WHEREAS, Through the years, Mr. and Mrs. Fussell have enjoyed
a loving and supportive relationship that has been blessed with a
fine family, including two sons, John and Richard, one grandchild,
and three great-grandchildren; and
WHEREAS, Both are graduates of Sam Houston State University
and chose education as their profession; Mrs. Fussell went on to
earn a master's degree from the University of Houston and establish
a career as an educator, while Mr. Fussell earned a master's degree
from The University of Texas and was employed as a school
administrator and teacher; and
WHEREAS, Treasured by their loved ones, Mr. and Mrs. Fussell
have shared life's trials and triumphs for nearly three quarters of
a century, and it is a great pleasure to join in paying tribute to
their enduring union; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 78th Texas
Legislature hereby congratulate W. D. and Argie Lee Fussell on the
joyous occasion of their 74th wedding anniversary and extend to
them heartfelt best wishes for continued happiness; and, be it
further
RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
prepared for Mr. and Mrs. Fussell as an expression of high regard by
the Texas House of Representatives.
