R E S O L U T I O N
WHEREAS, Students from Seco Mines Elementary School in Eagle
Pass recently won first place in the junior division of the Texas
Future Problem Solving Program state championship in the community
service category of competition, and their visit to the State
Capitol provides a fitting opportunity to honor this noteworthy
group of young people; and
WHEREAS, The Texas Future Problem Solving Program offers
gifted and talented students the opportunity to apply
problem-solving skills to real-life situations in their school,
community, or state; under the guidance of a mentor, class members
work together to identify a specific situation that they then
analyze in an attempt to better understand the problem and to
develop possible solutions to it; and
WHEREAS, Under the able leadership of coach Sylvia Saucedo,
these dedicated students sought to make a difference in their
community by identifying risk factors for diabetes and creating
viable solutions to remedy them; deciding they needed to help
people exercise to lead healthier lives, the children formulated
Project H.E.A.L.T.H., Helping Everyone to Achieve Long Term Health,
a plan to renovate an abandoned park with a walking trail that will
ultimately provide a fun, safe place for area residents to
exercise; and
WHEREAS, The students from Seco Mines Elementary School who
participated in Project H.E.A.L.T.H. are Alejandra Amaya, Rolando
Castillon, Samantha Davila, Norell Diego, Diana Estrada, Ricardo
Flores, Ashley Hernandez, Lizeth Hernandez, Emily Lopez, Monica
Lopez, Christopher Martinez, Cody Mata, Juan Navarro, Krizelle
Olivo, Evelyn Palomo, Hector Pineda, Monica Salinas, Stephanie
Salinas, Pat Saucedo, Erika Soto, and Vanessa Vasquez; and
WHEREAS, These admirable young people recognized and acted on
an issue of critical importance to their community; through their
actions, class members have learned that they can have a positive
impact on the world around them, and they have earned the respect of
all who know them for their remarkable achievement; now, therefore,
be it
RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 78th Texas
Legislature hereby commend the students from Seco Mines Elementary
School who participated in Project H.E.A.L.T.H. and extend to them
a warm welcome on the occasion of their trip to the State Capitol;
and, be it further
RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
prepared for the students and coach Sylvia Saucedo as an expression
of high regard by the Texas House of Representatives.
