R E S O L U T I O N
WHEREAS, Cecil Howard Green, a founder of Texas Instruments and a major educational and medical philanthropist, passed away on April 11, 2003, at the age of 102; and WHEREAS, This remarkable gentleman was born in Whitefield, England, on August 6, 1900, and he moved with his family to Canada as a youth; he graduated from the University of British Columbia and went on to earn a master's degree in electrical engineering from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in 1924; and WHEREAS, After working in various fields, Mr. Green joined the staff of Geophysical Service, Inc., (GSI) in Dallas in 1932 as a seismographic field crew chief, during which time he explored for oil in Texas, Oklahoma, and Louisiana; nine years later, he joined with three other men to purchase GSI; and WHEREAS, Renamed Texas Instruments in 1951, the company evolved into an international leader in microelectronics, earning approximately $8.4 billion annually and employing more than 40,000 people in 30 countries; having served as the president and vice president of this expansive company for many years, Mr. Green won widespread respect and admiration for his insight and business savvy; and WHEREAS, Mr. Green was married to the former Ida Mabelle Flansburgh from 1926 until her passing in 1986, and over the years the couple gave generously to a host of noteworthy institutions in the United States as well as in Britain, Canada, and Australia; their contributions have assisted in the creation of 50 academic, medical, and civic buildings, 20 instructional and research facilities, and 28 endowed chairs in 15 institutions; and WHEREAS, For his efforts, Mr. Green has been awarded more than a dozen honorary degrees, including a doctorate of science from Oxford University, and he was granted honorary knighthood by Queen Elizabeth II in 1991; and WHEREAS, Cecil Howard Green was a man of integrity, compassion, and vision, and while he will be greatly missed, the legacy he leaves behind will not soon be forgotten; now, therefore, be it RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 78th Texas Legislature hereby pay tribute to the life of Cecil Howard Green and extend sincere sympathy to his friends and loved ones; and, be it further RESOLVED, That when the Texas House of Representatives adjourns this day, it do so in memory of Cecil Howard Green.
