R E S O L U T I O N
WHEREAS, The principal of Hyer Elementary School in the
Highland Park Independent School District, Dr. Louis Powers, is
retiring at the end of the 2002-2003 school year, bringing to a
close a distinguished career in public education that has spanned
more than four decades; and
WHEREAS, Dr. Powers has served as Hyer Elementary's principal
for 18 years, earning the respect of educators, students, and
parents alike for his leadership and vision; under his able
guidance, the school has twice been named to the "honor roll school"
list of the Texas Business Education Coalition and the Just for the
Kids program, and the Texas Education Agency has awarded the school
"exemplary" status every year since the state implemented its
current rating system; and
WHEREAS, Dr. Powers, who helped establish the Highland Park
I.S.D. Academy of Lifelong Learning in 1998, is an accomplished
administrator who has served as a mentor and role model to his
colleagues; an active member of countless professional
organizations, he has won widespread acclaim for his work in behalf
of both teachers and students, and his contributions to the field of
public education have given generations of young students a strong
foundation on which to build; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 78th Texas
Legislature hereby congratulate Dr. Louis Powers on the occasion of
his retirement as principal of Hyer Elementary School and extend to
him warmest best wishes for continued happiness and success in his
future endeavors; and, be it further
RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
prepared for Dr. Powers as an expression of high regard by the Texas
House of Representatives.
