R E S O L U T I O N
WHEREAS, Words cannot adequately express the sorrow felt at
the loss of Sergeant Donald R. Walters, of Kansas City, Missouri,
who died in the Iraqi campaign on March 23, 2003, at the age of 33;
and
WHEREAS, Sergeant Walters was one of nine soldiers from the
army's 507th Maintenance Company who lost their lives in an ambush
in southern Iraq; for his valiant service in Operation Iraqi
Freedom, Sergeant Walters was posthumously awarded a Bronze Star
and a Purple Heart; and
WHEREAS, This courageous soldier saw combat in the first
Persian Gulf War and later served in the army reserves; he
reenlisted in the summer of 2002, motivated by a desire to serve his
country and to provide a better life for his wife and three
daughters; before his deployment overseas on February 17, 2003, he
was stationed at Fort Bliss, near El Paso; and
WHEREAS, A member of an air force family as a child, Sergeant
Walters grew up in Salem, Oregon, and Colorado Springs, Colorado;
during the interval following his first period of active military
service, he worked as a corrections officer and also at the Kansas
City airport; and
WHEREAS, Deeply devoted to his family, Sergeant Walters was
widely regarded with fond affection for his cheerful and
open-hearted nature; in addition to pursuing an army career, he
also aspired to write children's books; and
WHEREAS, Americans owe an immeasurable debt to their military
personnel, whose brave and steadfast efforts have long secured this
nation's treasured freedom; through his unfaltering dedication to
duty, honor, and his country, Sergeant Donald Walters embodied the
highest ideals of the United States armed forces, and the State of
Texas and the nation now mourn the loss of a hero who made the
ultimate sacrifice in his country's behalf, and whose life was a
blessing to all who were privileged to share his love and
friendship; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 78th Texas
Legislature hereby pay special tribute to the life of Sergeant
Donald R. Walters and extend sincere sympathy to the members of his
family: to his wife, Stacie Walters; to his daughters, Monica,
Danielle, and Amber Rose Walters; and to the other relatives and
many friends of this beloved American soldier; and, be it further
RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
prepared for his family and that when the Texas House of
Representatives adjourns this day, it do so in memory of Sergeant
Donald R. Walters.
