R E S O L U T I O N
WHEREAS, Carlos Gonzalez celebrated his 80th birthday on January 21, 2003, and this joyous occasion is most deserving of special recognition; and WHEREAS, A native Texan and third-generation U.S. citizen, Mr. Gonzalez was born in Mercedes in 1923; he went into the Civilian Conservation Corps at age 15 and the following year joined the United States Navy and served his country for four years during World War II; and WHEREAS, When he returned from service, this esteemed Texan earned a degree from the University of Houston and went to work for the city's downtown post office; earning the respect and admiration of his colleagues and superiors, he was the first Hispanic to be in charge of the data collection site; after retiring from the post office in 1978, he went to work for Exxon; and WHEREAS, Mr. Gonzalez has given generously of his time and talents to a host of worthwhile programs, including the Boy Scouts of America and the Knights of Columbus; he served as civic club president and was chairman of the committee to distribute Christmas baskets for the needy; and WHEREAS, Carlos Gonzalez has brought great joy and happiness to the many people whose lives he has touched; a distinguished veteran who served with valor in the South Pacific, he has earned a special place in the hearts of all who are privileged to know him; now, therefore, be it RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 78th Texas Legislature hereby congratulate Carlos Gonzalez on the joyous occasion of his 80th birthday and extend to him sincere best wishes for continued happiness; and, be it further RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be prepared for Mr. Gonzalez as an expression of high regard by the Texas House of Representatives.
