R E S O L U T I O N
WHEREAS, Pamela Crim of Allen is truly deserving of special recognition, for her determination and perseverance have served as an inspiration to all who have come to know her extraordinary story; a stroke survivor, this exceptional young woman has taken the motivation and fortitude that undergirded her recovery and applied them to helping others in the campaign against this tenacious foe; and WHEREAS, Owing to a previously undiagnosed condition, Mrs. Crim suffered two strokes before her 25th birthday; the first, more severe, stroke occurred when she was only 19 years old; confounding her doctors' bleak predictions, she rallied and achieved a full recovery; and WHEREAS, Several years later, when she was seven months pregnant, she suffered a second, milder stroke; she gave birth to a healthy son, however, and once again recovered fully; since then, the precipitating cause of her strokes has been determined and medication prescribed to prevent further attacks; and WHEREAS, In the summer of 2002, Mrs. Crim learned of the American Stroke Association's Train to End Stroke Marathon Training Program, in which participants raise money for the association while preparing, with the organization's help, to run a marathon; although she had never run before, she knew immediately that this was something she wanted to do; and WHEREAS, Persuading a coworker to serve as her "accountability partner," she joined the association's Dallas team and began training with the same focus and commitment she had brought to her earlier rehabilitation program; on January 12, 2003, she completed the Walt Disney World Marathon in Orlando, Florida--a 26.25-mile race--in 6 hours and 28 minutes; moreover, she raised $3,500 to contribute to the American Stroke Association's vital efforts; and WHEREAS, Taking her success one step further, Mrs. Crim has signed up to participate in the marathon training program yet again; now, however, she is serving as a mentor for new participants as they prepare to run the Kunitake Farms Kona Marathon in Kona, Hawaii, on June 22, 2003; and WHEREAS, Pamela Crim has not only overcome extreme life challenges, but has used them as stepping-stones to better serve others; impelled by her resilient, adventuresome spirit and her firsthand understanding of the dangers of stroke, she is making a priceless contribution to a crucial cause; now, therefore, be it RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 78th Texas Legislature hereby commend Pamela Crim on her stellar achievement in completing the Walt Disney World Marathon and on her outstanding volunteer work for the American Stroke Association and extend to her sincere best wishes for success in all of her future endeavors; and, be it further RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be prepared for Mrs. Crim as an expression of high regard by the Texas House of Representatives.
