R E S O L U T I O N
WHEREAS, San Antonio native William R. Sinkin is celebrating his 90th birthday on May 19, 2003, and this promises to be a memorable and joyous occasion for the relatives and many friends and colleagues of this distinguished civic leader, businessman, and visionary; and WHEREAS, With vigor and influence that would be the envy of a Texan half his age, Mr. Sinkin continues to play a key role in the economic, social, and cultural development of his community, and his contributions to the Lone Star State are numerous and diverse; only four short years ago, he founded a nonprofit organization, Solar San Antonio, which has conducted extensive studies of the value of renewable energy industries and applications in promoting economic growth in South Texas, and as the organization's chairman he remains actively involved in its work on a day-to-day basis; and WHEREAS, A graduate of The University of Texas, this accomplished businessman is chairman emeritus of the board of directors for Texas Bank and has enjoyed great success with his own financial consultancy, William R. Sinkin & Associates; he is a former president of the Independent Bankers of Texas, which in 1984 selected him as the state's Independent Banker of the Year; and WHEREAS, Mr. Sinkin is esteemed for his role as cofounder and first president of HemisFair, the international exposition that San Antonio hosted in 1968, and he was instrumental in the creation of San Antonio Goodwill Industries, an organization he subsequently led as president; a former president, as well, of Texans for Equal Education, he is the recipient of such accolades as the Martin Luther King, Jr., Lifetime Achievement Award, the National Association of Housing Officials' Individual Community Achievement Award, and the U.S. Commerce Department's National Award of Excellence for Development of Minority Business; and WHEREAS, This exemplary dedication to civic and charitable work has been supported by his beloved wife, Fay, and the couple's two sons, Larry and Richard, all of whom have realized great personal and professional success of their own; and WHEREAS, Mr. Sinkin is a truly remarkable man who continues to provide exceptional leadership in the quest for a more just, inclusive, and prosperous society; now, therefore, be it RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 78th Texas Legislature hereby congratulate William R. Sinkin of San Antonio on the occasion of his 90th birthday and warmly commend him for his tireless work in behalf of his community and his state; and, be it further RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be prepared for Mr. Sinkin as an expression of high regard by the Texas House of Representatives.
