R E S O L U T I O N
WHEREAS, In September 2003 the Montgomery County Performing Arts Society begins its 25th season of performing arts events and educational outreach to the Montgomery County area, and this joyous occasion is indeed worthy of special legislative recognition; and WHEREAS, This enduring organization was formed by community leaders interested in fostering an appreciation for artistic endeavor, as well as allowing local residents the opportunity to experience works by professional artists, such as vocal and instrumental music, dance, and theater; and WHEREAS, Since opening its inaugural season with a sold-out performance of Rossini's The Barber of Seville by the Texas Opera Company, the society has provided area residents with both classical and popular entertainment by such artists as Ferrante and Teicher, Burl Ives, the Houston Symphony Orchestra, the Houston Tidelanders, the Four Freshmen, the Kingston Trio, the Joffrey Ballet, the Vienna Boys Choir, Floyd Kramer, the River City Brass Band, the Preservation Hall Jazz Band, and the National Shakespeare Company; and WHEREAS, Over the past two decades, the society has annually presented the widely known and well-respected Entergy Young Texas Artists Music Competition and Concert, which was initiated in 1983 to encourage excellence in young musicians and to promote the development of high artistic standards in the community and throughout Texas; and WHEREAS, Each year the Montgomery County Performing Arts Society also sponsors a theater workshop for children, including student performances, workshops by visiting artists, and other educational and enrichment activities that sow the seeds of artistic interest in local youth; and WHEREAS, The venue for most society-sponsored events is the restored 69-year-old Crighton Theatre; located in downtown Conroe, this magnificent building is the "crown jewel" of Montgomery County and a tribute to the community's dedication to its proud heritage; and WHEREAS, With the Conroe area's popularity as a retirement location, the population and economy of the county have experienced significant growth, creating a broader potential audience and a bright future for the society; and WHEREAS, The members of this body are pleased to join the citizens of Montgomery County in congratulating all those associated with the Montgomery County Performing Arts Society for their praiseworthy role in the cultural and educational life of their community; now, therefore, be it RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 78th Texas Legislature hereby commemorate the 25th anniversary of the Montgomery County Performing Arts Society and extend to its members, organizers, and participants, both past and present, sincere best wishes for a meaningful and memorable celebration; and, be it further RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be prepared for the Montgomery County Performing Arts Society as an expression of high regard by the Texas House of Representatives.
