R E S O L U T I O N
WHEREAS, Author Lisa Waller Rogers has won the Western Heritage Award for Outstanding Juvenile Book for The Great Storm: The Hurricane Diary of J.T. King, published in 2002 by Texas Tech University Press; and WHEREAS, The National Cowboy and Western Heritage Museum established the Western Heritage Award more than 40 years ago in an effort to preserve the stories of the West; each year, the award is presented to winners in 15 categories of literature, film, television, and music; and WHEREAS, Ms. Rogers has distinguished herself as one of the premier storytellers of our time, and her vivid tales of the winning of the West relate historically factual events in an evocative, captivating style, capable of drawing in the most history-phobic youngster; and WHEREAS, A sixth-generation Texan, Ms. Rogers is a graduate of The University of Texas and has spent many years educating the children of the Lone Star State; this noted author has written five books, including three in her new series, the Lone Star Journals; and WHEREAS, Duly recognized for her outstanding work, Ms. Rogers's first book, A Texas Sampler: Historical Recollections, was a finalist for the Texas Institute of Letters Best Book for Children/Young People Award, and the first in her Journal series, Get Along, Little Dogies: The Chisholm Trail Diary of Hallie Lou Wells, is a 2003-2004 Lamplighter Award finalist; and WHEREAS, Through her writing, Ms. Rogers has given countless readers an opportunity to explore the reality of an era that is frequently shrouded in myth, and she has shown that a truthful, accurate portrayal of history can be entertaining as well as enlightening; in doing this, she has ensured that the rich and colorful history of the Lone Star State will be preserved for future generations, but perhaps more importantly, she has created historical works that future Texans will be eager to read; now, therefore, be it RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 78th Texas Legislature hereby congratulate Lisa Waller Rogers on her receipt of a Western Heritage Award for The Great Storm: The Hurricane Diary of J.T. King, and extend to her sincere best wishes for continued success; and, be it further RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be prepared for Ms. Rogers as an expression of high regard from the Texas House of Representatives.
