R E S O L U T I O N
WHEREAS, George A. Newman, a rancher and retired biology professor at Hardin-Simmons University, has been named Taylor County judge; and WHEREAS, Filling a vacancy left when the former county judge, Victor Carrillo, joined the Texas Railroad Commission in February 2003, Dr. Newman is an accomplished rancher, educator, and civic leader who brings experience and wisdom to his new position; and WHEREAS, A native of Las Cruces, New Mexico, he attended Baylor University, where he was awarded a bachelor's degree and a master's degree in biology in 1964 and 1966, respectively; he later earned a doctorate in wildlife biology from Texas A&M University; and WHEREAS, Dr. Newman joined the staff of Hardin-Simmons University in 1967, and over the ensuing 25 years he won the respect of students, teachers, and administrators alike for his dedication and knowledge; during his tenure, he coached the school's tennis team for five years in addition to teaching biology; and WHEREAS, Dr. Newman has given generously of his time and talents in support of various noteworthy programs; he has served as president of the Taylor County Expo Center board, the Wylie school board, and the Texas Ornithological Society; and WHEREAS, A devoted husband and father, Dr. Newman's dedication to his career and community is surpassed only by his love of family; he married the former Carolyn Ann Calvert in 1964, and their family has grown to include two children, Laura and Jason, and three grandchildren, Kelsey, Kourtney, and Kacey; and WHEREAS, George Newman has demonstrated the integrity and commitment essential for a successful tenure as a county judge, and it is appropriate to take this opportunity to recognize him; now, therefore, be it RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 78th Texas Legislature hereby congratulate George A. Newman on becoming Taylor County judge and extend to him sincere best wishes for success in his challenging position; and, be it further RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be prepared for Judge Newman as an expression of high regard by the Texas House of Representatives.
