H.R. No. 1017


R E S O L U T I O N
WHEREAS, Michelle Carter of Red Oak High School has attained the pinnacle of success by setting a new high school outdoor national record in the shot put; and WHEREAS, Competing at the UIL Class 4A Region II track and field championships, this remarkable student-athlete threw the shot a distance of 54 feet, 4.5 inches, besting a record that had stood for 20 years; and WHEREAS, A three-time Class 4A state champion in both the shot and discus, Ms. Carter also took top honors in the latter event with a throw of 153 feet, 11 inches, qualifying her to defend her dual titles at the 2003 UIL state championships, which will be held in Austin on May 9-10; and WHEREAS, Ms. Carter hails from a family of stellar athletes; her sister, D'Andra, was runner-up at the regional meet in both the discus and shot put, and their father, Michael Carter, is an Olympic silver medalist and a former NFL player; and WHEREAS, To achieve the level of performance demonstrated by Michelle Carter, an athlete must be both talented and dedicated; her accomplishments are a source of great pride to her family, friends, and fellow students, and it is indeed appropriate that she receive special recognition at this time; now, therefore, be it RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 78th Texas Legislature hereby congratulate Michelle Carter on her record-setting effort in the shot put at the UIL Class 4A Region II track and field championships, and extend to her sincere best wishes for continued success; and, be it further RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be prepared for Ms. Carter as an expression of high regard by the Texas House of Representatives.
