R E S O L U T I O N
WHEREAS, Students from the YES College Preparatory School of
Houston are visiting the State Capitol today, and it is indeed
appropriate to pay tribute to these outstanding young Texans who
have demonstrated such remarkable dedication in the pursuit of
their dreams of academic, professional, and personal success; and
WHEREAS, Situated on a 25-acre campus in southeast Houston,
YES is a state-chartered secondary school for students in grades
6-12 that provides inner-city students with a rigorous college
preparatory curriculum; winning acceptance to a college or
university is not simply a goal for each YES student but a
graduation requirement, and in 2001 every graduate was accepted by
at least four institutions of higher learning; and
WHEREAS, The YES College Preparatory School was founded in
1998, and during the past five years it has garnered both statewide
and national attention for its intensive approach to education;
students attend classes from 7:50 until 5:00 Monday through Friday,
and they attend school two Saturdays a month as well as an extra
month each summer; and
WHEREAS, Students of the YES College Preparatory School make
an extraordinary commitment to attain academic excellence, and as a
result they are eagerly pursued by our country's finest
universities; graduates of the program have been accepted by and
received scholarships from colleges across the country, including
Rice, Stanford, Cornell, Texas A&M University, and The University
of Texas; and
WHEREAS, The future of the Lone Star State rests firmly on the
shoulders of young Texans such as those who are here today, and the
students of the YES College Preparatory School are to be commended
for their truly exemplary scholastic achievements, as are the
educators, administrators, and parents who have helped to make
these efforts possible; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 78th Texas
Legislature hereby welcome the students of the YES College
Preparatory School of Houston and extend to them best wishes for an
enjoyable and informative visit.
