R E S O L U T I O N
WHEREAS, three professionals from different scientific disciplines have combined their interests and expertise to form a unique clinical research laboratory in Abilene, Texas, known as the Voice Institute of West Texas in which they are concerned with the study of the normal human voice, and the evaluation, diagnosis, and treatment of the disorders of the voice; and WHEREAS, this highly skilled group is comprised of Austin King, M.D., a specially trained medical doctor with a board certification in diseases of the ear, nose, and throat, as well as head and neck surgery and oncology; Charles Nelson, D.M., a nationally known bass singer and recognized specialist in voice pedagogy; and Jon Ashby, Ph.D., enjoys a well known clinical and professional reputation in speech-language pathology, audiology, and voice disorders; and WHEREAS, beginning in 1985 the three professionals agreed to meet on Wednesday afternoons to see patients and agreed to not receive compensation for seeing these patients to allow the proceeds to go towards the purchase of equipment and operational costs; and WHEREAS, the Voice Institute of West Texas' laboratory is located on the campus of Abilene Christian University as a tool of higher education by providing observation, clinical practice, diagnostic experience, and research opportunities for students of voice and speech-language pathology; and WHEREAS, Dr. King, Dr. Nelson, and Dr. Ashby have produced six interdisciplinary conferences with nationally known speakers on the care and treatment of the professional voice, have provided programs at over twenty-five state, national, and international medical conferences and conventions; now, therefore, be it RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 78th Texas Legislature hereby commend Dr. Austin King, Dr. Charles Nelson, and Dr. Jon Ashby for the establishment of the Voice Institute of West Texas at Abilene Christian University and for their exemplary work in their individual specialties; and be it further RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be prepared for each of these three professionals as an expression of high regard by the Texas House of Representatives.
