R E S O L U T I O N
WHEREAS, The Austin community has lost a good friend and distinguished geologist with the passing of Dr. Gus K. Eifler, Jr., on April 18, 2003, at the age of 95; and WHEREAS, Born in Taylor on February 14, 1908, Dr. Eifler moved to Austin as a child and graduated from Austin High School in 1925; he attended The University of Texas at Austin and earned his bachelor of arts degree in 1929 and his master of arts degree in 1930; he was a Teaching Fellow at Yale University and received his doctorate in geology in 1941; and WHEREAS, During World War II, Dr. Eifler served his nation with distinction; a captain in the United States Air Force, he worked as a bombing instructor and was considered an expert on the Norden bombsight; and WHEREAS, Dr. Eifler taught geology at The University of Texas for many years before establishing his own geological consulting business; he later returned to the university and worked for its Bureau of Economic Geology, contributing greatly to the Geologic Atlas of Texas; throughout his career, he published extensively in professional journals and played a significant role as a member of the Geological Society of America, the American Geological Union, and AAPG; and WHEREAS, Dr. Eifler had been married to his beloved wife, Essie Mae Wentworth Eifler for 59 years at the time of her passing, and he was a lifelong member of the First Baptist Church and a charter member of the men's Sunday school class, as well as a past president of The Bachelor's Club; and WHEREAS, His noteworthy contributions to the field of geology and the positive influence he had on family and friends have enshrined his memory in the hearts of those who were fortunate enough to have known this esteemed gentleman; now, therefore, be it RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 78th Texas Legislature hereby pay special tribute to the life of Dr. Gus Eifler, Jr., and extend deepest sympathy to the members of his family: to his son, Gus Kearney and his wife, Jane; to his son, Clayton Wentworth and his wife, Lynane; to his grandchildren, Robert, Campbell, Kris, Kevin and his wife, Cathryn, and Sean; to his great-grandchild, Kaycie May; and to his other relatives and many friends; and, be it further RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be prepared for his family and that when the Texas House of Representatives adjourns this day, it do so in memory of Dr. Gus K. Eifler, Jr.
