R E S O L U T I O N
WHEREAS, Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), more commonly
referred to as Lou Gehrig's disease, is a fatal, neurodegenerative
disease that attacks nerve cells and pathways in the brain and
spinal cord; and
WHEREAS, Every day, an average of 15 people are newly
diagnosed with ALS, totaling more than 5,600 annually, and it is
estimated that as many as 30,000 Americans may currently be
affected by ALS; and
WHEREAS, The average life expectancy of a person with ALS is
two to five years from the time of diagnosis, but with recent
advances in research and improved medical care, many patients are
living longer, more productive lives; and
WHEREAS, The ALS Association is the only national
not-for-profit health agency dedicated solely to the fight against
ALS; in Texas there are three chapters of ALSA that serve the ALS
community exclusively by raising funds for research, supporting
families, and providing medical equipment to patients; and
WHEREAS, ALS occurs throughout the world with no racial,
ethnic, or socioeconomic boundaries; ALS can strike anyone, and
every American is threatened by this disease; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 78th Texas
Legislature hereby commend the Texas chapters of the ALS
Association for their significant efforts to find a cure for and
improve the quality of life for those living with ALS and that all
Texans be encouraged to learn more about and join in the fight to
combat this devastating disease; and, be it further
RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
prepared for the Texas chapters of ALSA as an expression of high
regard by the Texas House of Representatives.
