R E S O L U T I O N
WHEREAS, Texas Longhorn legend Steve Worster is being
inducted into the SBC Cotton Bowl Classic Hall of Fame on April 29,
2003, at the Cotton Bowl Plaza in Fair Park; and
WHEREAS, The city council of Bridge City is proclaiming that
same day as "Steve Worster Day" to honor Mr. Worster's
accomplishments as a football player at Bridge City High School,
where he led his team to the state championship in 1966; and
WHEREAS, On completing his remarkable high school career,
this exceptional athlete joined Darrell Royal's University of Texas
(UT) Longhorns and was a stellar running back in UT's famed
"wishbone" attack that allowed the orange and white to reel off 30
straight victories in 1969-1970 and capture two national titles;
and
WHEREAS, A consensus All-American, Mr. Worster played in
three Cotton Bowl Classics and is 10th among UT running backs with
2,353 total yards; his performance in the 1970 Cotton Bowl ranks
among his finest, when he shredded the vaunted Notre Dame defense
for 155 yards on 20 carries, leading the Longhorns to the school's
second national football championship; and
WHEREAS, Truly one of the finest running backs ever to play
for The University of Texas, Steve Worster helped to write a
dramatic and memorable chapter in the storied history of Longhorn
football; the SBC Cotton Bowl Classic Hall of Fame honors
extraordinary individuals "who have played a significant role in
developing the tradition, prestige and pageantry of one of
America's most historic post-season bowl games," and this criterion
aptly describes the man who put the small town of Bridge City on the
map through his stellar achievements; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 78th Texas
Legislature hereby congratulate Steve Worster on his induction into
the SBC Cotton Bowl Classic Hall of Fame and extend to him sincere
best wishes for continued success and happiness; and, be it further
RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
prepared for Mr. Worster as an expression of high regard by the
Texas House of Representatives.
