R E S O L U T I O N
WHEREAS, Residents of Boerne lost a highly respected attorney
and community leader with the passing of Gordon L. Hollon on October
3, 2002; and
WHEREAS, A native Texan, Mr. Hollon was born in Brady on March
14, 1923; he attended Baylor University on an athletic scholarship
and though he was drafted to play football for the Pittsburgh
Steelers, he elected to continue his studies and served as
president of both the senior law class and the Senator Law Society
before earning his law degree in 1949; and
WHEREAS, During World War II, he enlisted in the Marine V-12
program and completed his officer training at Southwestern
University, where he met his future wife, Jamie; Mr. Hollon was
commissioned at Cornell University's Midshipmen's School and went
on to complete a tour of active naval duty in the Pacific theater;
and
WHEREAS, Returning home, he became the county attorney for
Kendall County in 1949, and he was later named the city attorney for
Boerne, a position he held with distinction for three decades; and
WHEREAS, Mr. Hollon was widely respected for his trial and
appellate work in both civil and criminal law, and his private
practice eventually became one of the state's largest law firms
outside of a metropolitan area; selected as Baylor's Lawyer of the
Year in 1998, he did a great deal of pro bono work and was a former
president of the Hill Country Bar Association and the Baylor Alumni
Association and an active member of the Federal Bar, the San Antonio
Bar, and the Texas Criminal Defense Attorney associations; and
WHEREAS, The owner of the Kendall County Abstract Company as
well, Mr. Hollon was active in his community and gave generously of
his time and talents to a host of worthy organizations, including
the Boerne Chamber of Commerce and the First Baptist Church; and
WHEREAS, Gordon Hollon was a man of great intelligence,
integrity, and compassion, and while he will be greatly missed, his
memory will live on in the hearts and minds of the many people whose
lives he touched; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 78th Texas
Legislature hereby pay tribute to the life of Gordon L. Hollon and
extend sincere sympathy to the members of his family: to his wife of
57 years, Jane Corey Carroll "Jamie" Hollon; to his children, Don
Hollon, James Hollon and his wife, Donna, Anna Kay Hollon and her
husband, Tom, and Leslie Hollon and his wife, Vicki; to his
grandchildren, Lance Harris, Jonathan Hollon, Rachel Hollon, Holly
Harris, David Hollon, Ryan Hollon, and Steven Hollon; to his
sister, Dorothy Nell Stevens; and to his other relatives and many
friends; and, be it further
RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
prepared for his family and that when the Texas House of
Representatives adjourns this day, it do so in memory of Gordon L.
Hollon.
