R E S O L U T I O N
WHEREAS, The Honorable John T. Boyd of Amarillo is retiring as senior justice of the Court of Appeals, Seventh Appellate District of Texas, after having served on the bench of that court for more than two decades; and WHEREAS, This accomplished Texan attended the Virginia Military Institute before enrolling in Baylor University, where he earned a bachelor of arts degree in 1949 and a law degree the following year; later in life, he returned to the halls of academia to pursue further legal studies, and in 1988 he completed his master of laws degree at the University of Virginia; and WHEREAS, A former partner at Morehead, Sharp, Boyd & Tisdel, Justice Boyd first entered public service in 1969, when he became district judge for the 64th Judicial District; 12 years later he joined the Seventh Court of Appeals, and in 1996 he rose to the rank of chief justice; he has held the post of senior justice since 2002; and WHEREAS, During the course of his illustrious career, Justice Boyd has served as president of the Amarillo Bar Association and as chairman of both the State Commission on Judicial Conduct and the judicial section of the State Bar of Texas; he is the 1979 recipient of the state bar's Presidential Citation, the Baylor Alumni Association's 2001 Price Daniel Distinguished Public Service Award, the Amarillo Bar Association's 2002 Chief Justice Charles L. Reynolds Lifetime Achievement Award, and the Texas Bar Foundation's 2003 Samuel Pessara Outstanding Jurist Award; and WHEREAS, While rendering immeasurable service to his fellow citizens in his professional capacity, Justice Boyd has contributed further still through his extensive involvement in the community; a deacon at the First Baptist Church and former president of the Plainview Rotary Club and Amarillo East Rotary Club, he has also served as president of the Plainview I.S.D. Board of Trustees and as a regent of Baylor University; and WHEREAS, In every aspect of his life, Justice Boyd has epitomized fairness, integrity, and service before self, and his efforts have truly made the Lone Star State a better place in which to live, work, and raise a family; now, therefore, be it RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 78th Texas Legislature hereby congratulate the Honorable John T. Boyd on his retirement as senior justice of the Seventh Court of Appeals and extend to him warmest best wishes for continued happiness and success; and, be it further RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be prepared for Justice Boyd as an expression of high regard by the Texas House of Representatives.
