R E S O L U T I O N
WHEREAS, José A. Guerrero is graduating with honors from the University of Houston (UH), and this outstanding achievement represents the culmination of a dream for this hardworking and inspiring young man; and WHEREAS, Born in Venezuela, Mr. Guerrero left his home and loved ones for the vast opportunities available in the United States; this remarkable individual arrived in this country with minimal English skills, attended college while working odd jobs and qualifying for scholarships, and lived an extremely frugal lifestyle to afford the high tuition rate for international students and to send money to his family; after six years of sustained effort, he earned an associate's degree; and WHEREAS, The passage of House Bill 1403 by the 77th Texas Legislature in 2001 enabled Mr. Guerrero to qualify as a Texas resident and alleviated his financial concerns regarding tuition, and he completed his course work in two years while maintaining his grade point average; in addition to his associate's degree, he has earned a certificate in business management and is graduating with honors with a degree in international business and a minor in marketing; he plans to earn an M.B.A. in international business and assist young Hispanic men and women in maintaining their ties with their heritage; and WHEREAS, Mr. Guerrero has been the recipient of many well-deserved accolades during his exemplary college career, including being named 2003 Outstanding President of the International Business Association at the UH Downtown Campus, an organization that he cofounded; he attained placement on both the dean's list and honors list, was selected as one of the top 10 communications students, and was voted 2002 Sports Editor of the Year by the Texas Intercollegiate Press Association; and WHEREAS, Further, he was chosen Houston Community College System (HCCS) Outstanding President World Friendship League for 1999-2000 and HCCS Central Campus Student Leader of the Year for 1998; his affiliations include Pi Gamma Mu International Honor Society in Social Science, the National Association of Hispanic Journalists, and the Association of Hispanic Advertising Agencies; and WHEREAS, José Guerrero has overcome many challenges to complete his undergraduate education, and it is truly a privilege to join in honoring him on this significant accomplishment; now, therefore, be it RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 78th Texas Legislature hereby congratulate José A. Guerrero on the momentous occasion of his graduation from the University of Houston and extend to him warmest best wishes for all the success and happiness he so richly deserves; and, be it further RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be prepared for Mr. Guerrero as an expression of high regard by the Texas House of Representatives.
