R E S O L U T I O N
WHEREAS, The Texas House of Representatives is pleased to
recognize Mittie Mae Wiley Williams, who is retiring after 56 years
of outstanding service as a teacher for the Kennard Independent
School District; and
WHEREAS, Mittie Williams was born February 10, 1927, in
Crockett; she earned a bachelor's degree from Texas College and a
master's degree from Prairie View A&M University; she also earned
certification in special education from Stephen F. Austin State
University; and
WHEREAS, In 1947, in the days of segregation, Ms. Williams
went to work as a teacher at the Kennard Black School, where she
taught for 18 years; she joined the faculty of the Kennard White
School one year before it was officially integrated, and she
remained with the Kennard Independent School District throughout
her highly successful career; and
WHEREAS, Over the years, Ms. Williams has devoted her life to
the education of young people, and she has been directly and
indirectly responsible for hundreds of students continuing their
education by attending college after graduating from high school;
and
WHEREAS, Mittie Williams has long held the respect and
admiration of her colleagues and her community for making a
difference in the lives of countless students, and her presence
with the Kennard Independent School District will be greatly
missed; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 78th Texas
Legislature hereby commend Mittie Mae Wiley Williams for her hard
work on behalf of the children of our state and her exemplary
service to the Kennard Independent School District and extend best
wishes to her for the retirement years ahead; and, be it further
RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
prepared for Ms. Williams as an expression of esteem from the Texas
House of Representatives.
