H.R. No. 1132


R E S O L U T I O N
WHEREAS, Residents of San Antonio lost a cherished neighbor, friend, and colleague with the passing of Mayme Yvonne Bailey Williams on May 2, 2003; and WHEREAS, A native Texan, Ms. Williams was born in El Paso on July 25, 1940; she later moved to San Antonio and graduated from Phillis Wheatley High School in 1957, then went on to attend Trinity University in San Antonio, Fisk University in Nashville, and the University of California, Los Angeles, earning a bachelor's degree and three master's degrees over the course of her studies; and WHEREAS, After serving as the director of the Veterans Administration Laboratory in Los Angeles, this esteemed woman returned to Texas in the 1980s to serve as the manager of institutional advancement at St. Philip's College in San Antonio; most recently, she was employed as the director of public funding and contract administration for the Alamo Community College District, where she earned the respect and admiration of those with whom she worked for her dedication to her position; and WHEREAS, Ms. Williams was a talented grant writer who secured a grant for the Child Development Center and a grant for training at the Southwest Campus of St. Philip's College for Kelly USA; highly respected in her field, she was also asked by the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development to travel to Washington, D.C., to serve as a consultant on the agency's existing grants in the summer of 2002; and WHEREAS, In addition, Ms. Williams was a devoted member of the San Antonio alumnae chapter of Delta Sigma Theta sorority, which she served on various committees and counted among her favorite organizations; she was also active in the NAACP and the Women's Progressive Club as well as a host of other civic, political, and religious groups in the city; and WHEREAS, Always one to lend a hand to someone in need, Mayme Williams was widely known for her kindness and generosity of spirit, and while she will be greatly missed, her memory will live on in the hearts and minds of the many people whose lives she touched; now, therefore, be it RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 78th Texas Legislature hereby pay special tribute to the life of Mayme Yvonne Bailey Williams and extend sincere sympathy to the family and many friends she leaves behind; and, be it further RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be prepared for her family and that when the Texas House of Representatives adjourns this day, it do so in memory of Mayme Yvonne Bailey Williams.
