R E S O L U T I O N
WHEREAS, Fifty-four years of marriage is truly cause for celebration, and on May 14, 2003, William H. and Bessie Marie Rutherford of Horizon City are marking this joyous event in their lives; and WHEREAS, Mr. Rutherford met his future wife in January 1946, when she and his mother both worked at the United States Air Force base in Memphis, Tennessee; the couple exchanged wedding vows on May 14, 1949, in Hernando, Mississippi, and they continue to enjoy a warm and fulfilling relationship today; and WHEREAS, Blessed with a fine family, the Rutherfords take great pride in their children, Dennis Rutherford, William H. Rutherford III, Christine Marie LeVasser, and Brenda Caroll; through the years, their joy has been compounded with the addition of eight grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren to their close-knit circle of loved ones; and WHEREAS, Mrs. Rutherford is retired from employment with the Fort Bliss commissary; a member of the Horizon City Kiwanis Club, along with her husband, she devotes her time and energy to the Kiwanis-sponsored Terrific Kids program in local schools; and WHEREAS, Mr. Rutherford served his country during World War II as a member of the United States Navy; in 1946 he joined the United States Army, from which he retired in 1971 with the rank of sergeant major; he served as El Paso County sheriff as well as Horizon City police chief and also has been the owner of an automotive repair shop; in addition to Kiwanis, his civic involvement includes the Oz Glaze Senior Center; and WHEREAS, Together, this devoted couple have set an inspirational example of mutual love, respect, and admiration for their family and many friends, and it is truly a pleasure to join in honoring them at this time; now, therefore, be it RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 78th Texas Legislature hereby congratulate William and Marie Rutherford on the happy occasion of their 54th wedding anniversary and extend to them sincere best wishes for the future; and, be it further RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be prepared for Mr. and Mrs. Rutherford as an expression of high regard by the Texas House of Representatives.
