R E S O L U T I O N
WHEREAS, Each year for the past decade, Texas Environmental
Excellence Awards have been presented to individuals,
organizations, schools, and businesses that have created
successful programs to preserve and protect the environment of the
Lone Star State, and the 2003 winner in the government category is
the Port of Houston Authority; and
WHEREAS, Working in concert with a number of state and
federal agencies, the Port of Houston Authority has implemented a
visionary 50-year project to expand the Houston Ship Channel and
use the dredged material in environmentally beneficial ways in
Galveston Bay; and
WHEREAS, Among the numerous positive results already
realized by this initiative are the construction of a six-acre bird
island, the creation of 220 acres of intertidal salt marshes, and
the resurrection of Redfish Island; and
WHEREAS, The leadership of the Port of Houston Authority has
implemented an expansion of the Houston Ship Channel that not only
addresses commercial needs, but also improves the ecological
viability of this sensitive area, and its efforts in this regard are
indeed worthy of special legislative recognition; now, therefore,
be it
RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 78th Texas
Legislature hereby congratulate the Port of Houston Authority on
its selection as the 2003 winner of the Texas Environmental
Excellence Award in the government category; and, be it further
RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
prepared for the Port of Houston Authority as an expression of high
regard by the Texas House of Representatives.
