R E S O L U T I O N
WHEREAS, The National LULAC Education Summit will convene on May 17, 2003, at The University of Texas at Arlington, bringing together North Texas metroplex teachers, administrators, counselors, students, and parents with LULAC leaders to address the continuing Hispanic dropout crisis; and WHEREAS, Studies have shown that the lack of a high school diploma has a lasting detrimental effect on the lives not only of the students who drop out, but also on their children, and the dropout rate among Hispanics continues to be "alarming"; and WHEREAS, The summit, which is based on the model of a meeting held in Illinois in 2002, has as its goals to promote awareness of the dropout crisis, to formulate plans for reversing this damaging trend, and to establish a nationwide network of Hispanic high schools; to further promote the educational opportunities available to Hispanic students of all ages, the conference organizers will also share data and best practice findings with key elected officials; and WHEREAS, The Lone Star State's continued cultural and economic development is possible only if outstanding educational opportunities exist for all Texas residents, and the efforts of the League of United Latin American Citizens are indeed worthy of special commendation as its members prepare for this important national event; now, therefore, be it RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 78th Texas Legislature hereby recognize the second annual National LULAC Education Summit on May 17, 2003, and extend to its organizers and participants best wishes for an informative and productive meeting; and, be it further RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be prepared for the organizers of the 2003 National LULAC Education Summit as an expression of high regard by the Texas House of Representatives.
