R E S O L U T I O N
WHEREAS, The Pleasant Grove Weed and Seed Program is a resident-driven, federal and local partnership for coordinated law enforcement and neighborhood reinvestment; and WHEREAS, The Southeast Dallas program endeavors to "weed out" local criminals while "seeding" the community with positive resources through a four-point strategy, including law enforcement and the prosecution of wrong-doers, community law enforcement problem-solving, prevention, intervention, and treatment opportunities, and neighborhood restoration; and WHEREAS, A collaboration of neighborhood residents and local and federal agencies, including representatives from Dallas police and schools, the FBI, ATF, DEA, and U.S. attorney's office, Pleasant Grove Weed and Seed focuses on the area east of Hatcher on 175 to Masters and north to I30 and Masters; and WHEREAS, This ambitious partnership is led by site coordinator Hellen Louise Johnson, who is an LVN with a bachelor's degree in sociology and further studies in psychology and behavioral modification and is employed with Out But Not Free, Inc.; the program includes tutoring and mentoring, GED and ESL classes, and drug treatment and gang prevention initiatives; it also sponsors cleanup activities to encourage new businesses to locate in the area and the rehabilitation of vacant and dilapidated houses so that the houses are sellable; and WHEREAS, The Pleasant Grove Weed and Seed Program incorporates the time, talents, and determination of numerous individuals who are making outstanding contributions to their community, and it is a pleasure to honor this notable endeavor; now, therefore, be it RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 78th Texas Legislature hereby commend Hellen Louise Johnson and all those involved with the Pleasant Grove Weed and Seed Program and extend to them best wishes for success in the years to come; and, be it further RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be prepared for the Pleasant Grove Weed and Seed Program as an expression of high regard by the Texas House of Representatives.
