R E S O L U T I O N
WHEREAS, The Honorable John Longoria has earned the gratitude
of countless fellow citizens for his eminent public service and
commitment to securing a brighter future for all Texans; and
WHEREAS, Born in Elmendorf in 1945, Mr. Longoria graduated
with honors from St. Mary's University in 1967; he subsequently
joined the United States Army and attained the rank of captain;
following his honorable discharge from the service, he returned to
St. Mary's to attend law school, earning his J.D. in 1973; and
WHEREAS, Mr. Longoria won election to the House of
Representatives in 1992 and served five consecutive terms before
retiring at the end of the 77th Legislature; during his tenure in
the house he held assignments on the Corrections, County Affairs,
State Affairs, State Recreation Resources, and Public Health
committees, and his tireless efforts as he kept faith with the trust
invested in him won the respect and admiration of colleagues and
constituents alike; and
WHEREAS, A longtime leader in local government and civic
affairs, this distinguished gentleman has also served as Bexar
County judge and Bexar County commissioner, vice president of the
San Antonio Metropolitan Transit Authority, and chairman of the
Bexar County Health Facilities Development Corporation and Bexar
County Housing Finance Corporation; in addition, he has worked with
the San Antonio Task Force on Energy, the Community Action Advisory
Board, and the Literacy Board; and
WHEREAS, While shouldering the responsibilities of such
offices and simultaneously managing an active law practice, John
Longoria has further devoted countless hours to area youth; closely
involved with the San Antonio Children's Shelter, he has served on
the LEESA Bilingual Advisory Committee for the Harlandale
Independent School District and on the boards of the Alamo Area
Council of Girl Scouts, Catholic Family & Children's Services, and
Youth Alternatives, Inc.; and
WHEREAS, In all his myriad endeavors, Mr. Longoria enjoys the
love and support of a close-knit family; he and his wife, the former
Patricia Ann Walden, are the proud parents of three sons, John,
George, and James, and twin daughters, Lisa and Lydia; and
WHEREAS, The tremendous dedication, energy, and vision that
John Longoria has brought to his many public posts have contributed
immeasurably to the betterment of his community and the Lone Star
State, and it is indeed a pleasure to recognize this esteemed Texan
and valued friend; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 78th Texas
Legislature hereby commend the Honorable John Longoria on his
exemplary public service and extend to him sincere best wishes for
success in all of his future endeavors; and, be it further
RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
prepared for Mr. Longoria as an expression of highest regard by the
Texas House of Representatives.
