H.R. No. 1275


R E S O L U T I O N
WHEREAS, Texans across the state are profoundly thankful for the safe recovery of U.S. Army Specialist Shoshana Nyree Johnson of El Paso, who was wounded and held for three harrowing weeks as a prisoner during the Iraqi campaign; and WHEREAS, Specialist Johnson was among a group of soldiers from the 507th Maintenance Company, which was ambushed in southern Iraq on March 23, 2003; she and four other survivors of the attack were held in solitary confinement in Baghdad for 12 to 15 days before being moved to a series of other locations; they were rescued on April 13, 2003, by Marines with the 3rd Light Armored Reconnaissance Battalion who were advancing north toward Tikrit; and WHEREAS, Born in Panama, where her release has also been hailed by ecstatic citizens, Specialist Johnson later moved to El Paso with her family and graduated from Andress High School in 1991; while in school she was a member of the drill team and the ROTC; and WHEREAS, This highly respected soldier, the daughter of a veteran of the first Gulf War, joined the army in 1998 and is stationed at Fort Bliss; in addition to handling her military responsibilities, she also proudly fulfills the role of mother to her beloved two-year-old daughter, Janelle; and WHEREAS, The sacrifices made by Specialist Johnson and her fellow soldiers while serving their country in Iraq have earned the heartfelt gratitude of all Americans, who now join her daughter, Janelle Johnson, her parents, Eunice and Claude Johnson, her sisters, and the members of this body in applauding her safe and anxiously awaited return; now, therefore, be it RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 78th Texas Legislature hereby commend Army Specialist Shoshana Nyree Johnson for her steadfast service in behalf of this nation during the Iraqi campaign and officially welcome her home to the Lone Star State; and, be it further RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be prepared for Specialist Johnson as an expression of high regard by the Texas House of Representatives.
