R E S O L U T I O N
WHEREAS, Students Helping in the Naturalization of Elders (SHINE) has provided young people the opportunity to participate in the community and make a difference in the lives of others; and WHEREAS, A national service-learning initiative that began in 1997, SHINE builds partnerships among community colleges, universities, and community-based organizations to provide citizenship classes to people over the age of 50; and WHEREAS, Ably leading the SHINE program at The University of Texas at El Paso (UTEP) is program coordinator Richard Gutierrez; a political science professor who has worked on several political campaigns and has been a delegate for the State Democratic Convention, Mr. Gutierrez encourages his students to become active in civic work to augment the lessons they learn in the classroom; and WHEREAS, Through their hard work and selfless commitment to helping others, the students who participate in Project SHINE at UTEP have made a lasting, positive impact on the lives of their fellow Texans; now, therefore, be it RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 78th Texas Legislature hereby commend The University of Texas at El Paso students involved in Project SHINE and program coordinator Richard Gutierrez for their exemplary service to the community and extend to them best wishes for the future; and, be it further RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be prepared for Project SHINE at The University of Texas at El Paso as an expression of high regard by the Texas House of Representatives.
