R E S O L U T I O N
WHEREAS, On May 31, 2003, Dr. A. Michael Powell is retiring as
a professor of biology at Sul Ross State University, where he has
taught for more than 40 years; and
WHEREAS, Joining the university as an assistant professor of
biology in 1963, Dr. Powell has served with distinction as
department chairman, supervisor of greenhouse operations,
supervisor of demonstration gardens, and curator of the Sul Ross
Herbarium, in which position he will remain after his retirement
from teaching; he has also developed more than 20 different courses
and has more than 100 publications, including six books; and
WHEREAS, Dr. Powell, an active member of numerous
professional organizations, may claim the notable achievement of
having created the concept behind the Chihuahuan Desert Research
Institute (CDRI); he helped to found the CDRI, served as the first
president of the board of directors, and currently sits on the board
of directors, board of scientists, and executive committee; and
WHEREAS, A prominent figure in his field, Dr. Powell has
received numerous recognitions, including two Donovan Stewart
Correll Awards; the recipient of eight consecutive National Science
Foundation research grants, he has served on the foundation's panel
in Washington, D.C., and has worked for the Department of Biology
initiating and supervising his native plant propagation program and
demonstration garden; and
WHEREAS, This esteemed professor, who missed only one class
due to illness in his four decades of teaching, is an exemplary
educator and expert biologist who has positively influenced the
lives of countless young people by whetting their curiosity and
encouraging their desire to learn, and his noteworthy tenure of
service indeed merits special recognition; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 78th Texas
Legislature hereby congratulate Professor A. Michael Powell on his
retirement from teaching at Sul Ross State University and extend to
him best wishes for continued happiness; and, be it further
RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
prepared for Dr. Powell as an expression of high regard by the Texas
House of Representatives.
