H.R. No. 1355
R E S O L U T I O N
WHEREAS, Since 1979, the Greater Houston Preservation
Alliance has recognized local contributors to the preservation,
restoration, and enhancement of Houston's architectural heritage
through the presentation of its Good Brick Award, and it is a
pleasure to join in honoring one of this year's deserving
recipients; and
WHEREAS, The residence located at 2337 Blue Bonnet was
originally constructed in 1937 by Harold Calhoun using a
construction system called Stran-Steel, and its clean lines fit in
well with Houston's image as a modern city; when it was completed,
the home was featured in numerous national magazines as an
excellent example of international style architecture; and
WHEREAS, In 2001, Courtney and Fred Steves purchased the
home, which had been neglected and was in much need of repair; they
hired Glassman Shoemake Maldonado Architects to assist them in
restoring it, and with meticulous research and extreme care, they
were able to realize this dream, even retaining much of the home's
original cabinetry, built-ins, bathroom fixtures, furniture, and
exterior facade; and
WHEREAS, A true architectural treasure, this structure is yet
again a valued part of the Houston landscape, and its beauty and
charm is certain to be admired for years to come; now, therefore, be
it
RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 78th Texas
Legislature hereby congratulate Courtney and Fred Steves and the
Glassman Shoemake Maldonado Architects on their receipt of a
Greater Houston Preservation Alliance 2003 Good Brick Award and
commend them for their work in preserving the unique architectural
heritage of their city; and, be it further
RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
prepared for them as an expression of high regard by the Texas House
of Representatives.
