WHEREAS, Texans, and indeed all Americans, are deeply
indebted to the armed services personnel who through the years have
responded to international threats to liberty and who have fought
overseas in defense of this noble ideal, and we recognize that these
extraordinary individuals too often face the ultimate sacrifice of
their own lives in the course of safeguarding our freedom; and
WHEREAS, The Veterans of Foreign Wars has a rich tradition of
"honoring the dead by helping the living" through service programs
and special projects, which range from providing active-duty
personnel with free phone cards to raising money for the World War
II memorial, and Memorial Day of 2003 provides an opportunity to pay
special tribute to those American servicemen and servicewomen who
have made the ultimate sacrifice on our behalf; and
WHEREAS, Americans owe a great debt of gratitude to the
valiant individuals who have defended our nation against
aggression, tyranny, and injustice; it is most fitting that we
recognize the sacrifices of the veterans who have served our nation
and that we work to preserve and perpetuate the memory of those who
did not return home, for in the end, this is the only means we have
to repay their loyal and courageous service; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 78th Texas
Legislature hereby honor the memory of the deceased members of the
Veterans of Foreign Wars on Memorial Day and extend deepest
sympathies to the members of their families; and, be it further
RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
prepared for the Veterans of Foreign Wars and that when the Texas
House of Representatives adjourns on this day, it do so in memory of
these veterans.
