H.R. No. 1403


R E S O L U T I O N
WHEREAS, The Texas House of Representatives supports without reservation the efforts of our institutions of higher learning to attract and retain the world's top teachers, scholars, and researchers; and WHEREAS, The University of Houston has a long tradition of counting among its distinguished faculty highly regarded and honored leaders in their respective fields of expertise; and WHEREAS, Jody Williams, recipient of the 1997 Nobel Prize for Peace, has accepted a position with the University of Houston Graduate School of Social Work as a Distinguished Visiting Professor for the 2003-2004 academic year; and WHEREAS, The founding coordinator of the International Campaign to Ban Landmines (ICBL), which shared with her the 1997 Nobel Prize for Peace, Ms. Williams has overseen the growth of the ICBL from six nongovernmental organizations in 1992 to more than 1,000 organizations in 60 countries; she has also written and spoken extensively regarding the need for an international prohibition of landmines; and WHEREAS, Ms. Williams brings to the University of Houston an international reputation in the areas of education and humanitarian projects and will share with her students methods of building practical and theoretical understanding of international political economics and humanitarian issues and developing international justice initiatives; now, therefore, be it RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 78th Texas Legislature hereby commend the University of Houston for building on its well-deserved reputation for learning and leading by adding Jody Williams to its faculty as a Distinguished Visiting Professor in the Graduate School of Social Work; and, be it further RESOLVED, That official copies of this resolution be prepared for Ms. Williams and the University of Houston as expressions of esteem from the Texas House of Representatives.
