R E S O L U T I O N
WHEREAS, On May 18, 2003, the Reverend Manuel Henderson and
members of Morning Chapel Christian Methodist Episcopal Church are
embarking on a year-long celebration honoring the church's legacy
in the life of the Fort Worth community; and
WHEREAS, Founded in the latter part of the 19th century, the
church was the religious home of many former slaves who sought
freedom in how they worshipped and in their choice of pastors;
members petitioned for separation in 1866 and were granted that
request in 1868 by the General Conference of Methodist South; and
WHEREAS, The Reverend W. H. Coger provided spiritual
leadership for early congregants, among whom were Eugene "Blue"
Rollins, Anderson Caville, and Henry C. Williams, who helped build
the first church building at 6th and Crump streets; and
WHEREAS, For 135 years, Morning Chapel Christian Methodist
Episcopal Church, also known as the Old Rock Church, has ministered
to area residents and visitors, and it remains a tribute to the
generosity of its members, past and present, who have devoted their
time, energy, and financial resources to ensure its continued
existence as a house of worship; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 78th Texas
Legislature hereby congratulate the pastor and congregation of
Morning Chapel Christian Methodist Episcopal Church on the occasion
of the church's 135th anniversary and extend to them best wishes for
the future; and, be it further
RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
prepared for Morning Chapel Christian Methodist Episcopal Church as
an expression of high regard by the Texas House of Representatives.
