R E S O L U T I O N
WHEREAS, The Whittier Elementary School Family Literacy Program, created in January 2002, has achieved considerable success in its short history and shows great promise for the future; and WHEREAS, Under the direction of the Neuhaus Education Center and funded by The Houston Annenberg Challenge and the Cullen Foundation, the program is designed to assist struggling readers, particularly in first and second grades, through a special curriculum and by involving their parents in the learning process; and WHEREAS, Coordinator Dianne Wells, assisted by two of the school's teachers, is working with students and their parents to build the children's reading skills in a family-friendly environment; and WHEREAS, The ability to read is essential to everyday living and those without it face enormous barriers to achieving success; the Whittier Elementary School Family Literacy Program is designed to help students to master this vital skill, and all those associated with the initiative are indeed worthy of special legislative recognition; now, therefore, be it RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 78th Texas Legislature hereby commend the participants in the Whittier Elementary School Family Literacy Program and extend to them sincere best wishes for continued success in their endeavors; and, be it further RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be prepared for these individuals as an expression of high regard by the Texas House of Representatives.
