R E S O L U T I O N
WHEREAS, The city of San Antonio has lost a talented doctor
and distinguished citizen with the passing of Dr. Enrique M. Galan
on May 1, 2003, at the age of 68; and
WHEREAS, Dr. Galan was born on October 29, 1934, in Havana,
Cuba; he graduated from the University of Havana in 1952 and
attended medical school at the University of Havana and the
University of Mexico City, receiving his medical degree from the
University of Madrid, Spain, in 1962; and
WHEREAS, After earning his degree, Dr. Galan continued his
studies at Harvard Medical School; he began his pediatric residency
in Providence, R.I., and completed it at Children's Hospital Boston
where he was the recipient of a two-year fellowship in pediatric
nephrology; and
WHEREAS, Dr. Galan immigrated to the United States of America
in 1962; proud of his new citizenship, he joined the U.S. Navy in
1967, serving two years as a lieutenant commander at the Naval Air
Station in Corpus Christi before being honorably discharged; and
WHEREAS, In 1970, Dr. Galan and his family settled in San
Antonio, where he opened his private practice and for three decades
served the health care needs of countless young people; in 2000, he
sold his practice but continued to work part time in the San Antonio
Pediatric Association; and
WHEREAS, Dr. Galan made important contributions through his
involvement in numerous professional organizations; he was a
lifetime member of the Bexar County Medical Society, American
Medical Association, Texas Medical Association, Texas Pediatric
Society, and San Antonio Pediatric Society; in addition, he shared
his time and expertise as a clinical assistant professor at The
University of Texas Health Science Center of San Antonio; and
WHEREAS, A valued member of his community, Dr. Galan attended
St. Luke Catholic Church and belonged to the Cuban Cultural Center
of San Antonio; an avid racquetball player, he was rightfully proud
of his induction into the Hall of Fame of the International
Frontennis Association in Miami, Florida; and
WHEREAS, Dr. Galan touched the lives of people in a real and
significant way through his work in medicine, and his spirit will
live on in the hearts of those who knew him; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 78th Texas
Legislature hereby pay special tribute to the life of Dr. Enrique
Galan and extend sincere sympathy to the members of his family: to
his wife of 40 years, Maria del Pilar Galan; to his five children
and their spouses, Dr. Henry L. Galan and Amy Weiser, Joseph M.
Galan, Francis X. Galan and Emma Mata, Dr. John P. Galan and Blanca
Olguin, and Mark A. Galan and Jennifer Savoy; to his seven
grandchildren, John Andrew, Nicole Gabriela, Jacob, Hank, Nicolas,
and John Luke; to his sisters, Maria Christina Messer, Lourdes
Milian, and Mary Grace Galan; and to his other relatives and many
friends; and, be it further
RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
prepared for his family and that when the Texas House of
Representatives adjourns on this day, it do so in memory of Enrique
M. Galan.
